Ancient city of Acriae

Prefectural Administration of Lakonia

Polybius called it Acreae, and Ptolemy Acrea. It was located on the site of todays Kokkinia, southeast of ancient Elos. Founded in the prehistoric period, Acriae grew into a great city in historical times, acting as the port for Geronthres and all the surrounding area. It belonged (from 146 BC) to the Peloponnesian League, and later (22 BC) to the League of Free Laconians. Pausanias says that there was a statue of Nicocleos here, who had taken part in two Olympiads and won five victories in games.
